Skauen’s ‘Slideshow Johnny’ is a portrait episode of an experimental outsider artist, dedicated to the bone, highly influenced by personal issues. Alternating between beat poetry, comedy and with a surreal, dark and poetic sensibility, the series of acts diverse in tone and subject matter. There is a hilarity, naïveté and insecurity depicted through the character of Johnny that explores the fragility of individual artistic expression alongside the scrutiny and hasty critique of the mainstream. Skauen pushes that fragility to its limits and invites the audience to engage with those aspects of artistic practice and opinion making. At the forefront of the work is fear of mediocrity and the notion of legitimacy and critique, the audience is a vital part of the act, their laughter, clapping, cheering, or bemusement...

What does it imply to appropriate something? How relevant are not only public spaces but also social and cultural spaces? In which manner do the processes of appropriation occur and how important are perceptions, actions or interpretations in this connection?

The space coming into action is both a relational, socially constructed space and an objective public space. As a result of the society’s economic production and due to its existing structures and infrastructural arrangements, the space offers a possibility for appropriation or forms a barrier for the protagonists. This scope or payload space is characterized by a constant duality i.e. the relation between the individual and the society, which is reflected in this space, changing it by the process of appropriation. The exhibition comes in four parts: paintings, an audio play, a questionnaire, and a dress.

The paintings from the Self-Portrait with a Lover and a Cigarette series are double self-portraits, the author enacting in them herself and her alleged, male or female, lover. In some of the pieces the heterosexual character of the couples becomes uncertain, gender identities are called into question and subjectivized, overlapping and drifting. Despite its many positive connotations, the figure of the lover is morally suspect, often associated with sin, irresponsibility, hedonism, with sexual rather than emotional or intellectual activities etc. Similarly, the cigarette – an attribute of fleeting pleasure, combated and banned, repressed and desired. Both, having a lover and smoking cigarettes, is problematic and might be socially unacceptable. At the same time, both belong to a highly intimate and private domain; one we find precious and protect.,,,

The video work CROSSFADE focuses on two types of mass migration between South America and Europe, comparing the process of population expansion in human beings with the expansion dynamics of populations in the nature.
The arrival of Europeans in the Americas was an event that would irrevocably change the course of history.
By the time the first explorers had landed, an invasion of the continent had already become inevitable. For sixteenth century Europeans, America became a screen onto which they could project their fantasies of discovering a new Eden. Many of them lost their lives in pursuit of this illusion, while many Native Americans lost theirs in a struggle to defend their way of life. But then again, one man’s dream is another man’s nightmare.

Madi Boyd is a synaesthete from Great Britain, whose artistic work focuses on perception and the brain. In collaboration with neuro-scientists, Dr. Mark Lythgoe and Dr. Beau Lotto, from University College London her work incorporates and combines installation, film and sculpture. Her recent project The Point of Perception explores how much information the human brain needs in order to know what it is looking at. It is an art experience and scientific arena about vision.

Carrie C Firman is an emerging electronic artist from the US. She is a synaesthete and her work is inspired by studying and experiencing the crossing of senses. She sees synaesthesia not only as a sensory phenomenon, but also a fantastic world interface, responsible for completely unique perceptual experiences.

Lightplay, the title of the exhibition, signifies the concurrent medium in the installations on show. Light plays both a conceptual and active role in the practice of Kite & Laslett: it is a means by which to explore the immaterial through our interaction and phenomenological experience of architectural space.

In the duo's first solo show in Germany, their characteristic site-specific interventions in non-dedicated art spaces are narrated in a gallery environment. The artists present three installations; Candescence, Orbit and Reflex, each inhabiting one of the three exhibition rooms. The pieces are de-contextualised, presented as objects, yet they actively engage the viewer and revise our perception of the interior realm.

In addition to the installations, Kite & Laslett present films of their works to-date and the photographic series EXP: Spiller’s Millennium Mills, their first experiments with light and space.

My observations of space are defined by the overlap of objects and bodies. I search images that have both depth and immediacy. The perceptive space essentially becomes warped or «tanned». I fold and unfold the colour so that a special light inside the colour is find inside the painting.

Since 2005 I use the material of large, white or black hanging papers dedicated to rooms of the presentation. They correspond with the incoming daylight. I observe the light situation on the paper’s surface, the created space by cracks and tears inside the paper as well as the presence of the paper installation at the room of the presentation. Also, the viewer is asked to unfold the material by his way of movement.

Ein Laden, der aufgegeben wird, ein Gebäude, das verschwindet, oder ein Mensch, der plötzlich stirbt. All diese Ereignisse hinterlassen Leerstellen. Aber auch in der Literatur taucht dieser Begriff auf, um ein unmittelbares Aufeinandertreffen von Erzählsträngen zu beschreiben.
Diese Stellen sind präsent in ihrer Abwesenheit. Man spürt und sieht, dass etwas fehlt, dass es nicht so ist, wie es mal war.
Danelia Gugg und Thomas Prochnow beschäftigen sich beide mit diesem Begriff und den oben genannten Themen, wenn auch auf ganz unterschiedliche Weise. Kuratiert wird diese Ausstellung von Matthieu Chladek.

"Dive and Run" is the paradoxical title of a multimedia art exhibition conceived by German artist and curator Matthias Deumlich. The contradictory image of diving and running is meant to express the need to slow down and reflect in the midst of all the fast-paced world surrounding us.

Featuring works by eleven artists, including Ingeborg Lüscher, Alexandra Ranner, Costantino Ciervo, Edgar Leciejewski, and Ingolf Keiner, the show take a critical, poetical, humorous, and ironic look at existential questions and problems of our time.

Works on view include the video "Meta-Atem: Über Inspiration und Exspiration" by Timm Ulrichs, in which the artist finds a poignant image for the tragic fact that life always means successively working on its dissipation and disappearance.

In the video "Let's make it compact," Vassiliea Stylianidou ironizes the usual approach of branding and applies it to a place and its landscape, condensing them to a logo and an object that she promotes as an expression of perfect commercial aestheticism. Through her research-based artistic practice, Paula Muhr examines socio-cultural strategies of constructing sexuality, gender, desire and normality. In her installations, which combine staged photography with found materials, texts, moving images and sound, Muhr focuses on the interdisciplinary exploration of hysteria and female madness. According to cultural critic Elaine Showalter, “the hysteric is someone who has a story, and whose story is told by science”. Muhr’s work references and recontextualises films, medical photographs and written documents of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, which were instrumental in staging the scientific visibility of this mythic malady. By examining the validity of (pseudo)scientific, social and medical practices which produce seemingly objective knowledge, Muhr aims to challenge the implicit visual codes of representing the (ab)normal woman and create alternative multilayered interpretations of female subjectivity...

LaRete Art Projects and Galleria Bianconi are pleased to announce IT’S YOUR TURN, opening on February 28th and running until May 25th, 2013. The exhibition, curated by Julia Draganović and Claudia Löffelholz, offers a path through the works of Susanne Bosch (Wesel, 1967) who defines herself as an artist who “works predominantly with and in public”, Pablo Helguera (Mexico City, 1971), a polyhedral artist who expresses himself with a wide range of media, and who is also an educator and Icaro Zorbar (Bogotá, 1977), an animator of “assisted installations”.
On the opening evening – on the 28th of February, 6.00 – 9.00 p.m., the exhibition will be combined with a series of performances by Pablo Helguera and Icaro Zorbar, relating to the art works on display, which show the different approaches of the two artists to the audience.
