Factories of Knowledge, Industries of Creativity
Book launch of Gerald Raunig's book “Factories of Knowledge, Industries of Creativity” (Semiotext(e)/MIT Press, trans. Aileen Derieg, with an afterword by Antonio Negri) and panel discussion between Gerald Raunig, Emma Dowling and Susan Kelly

Gerald Raunig’s new book unfolds the worlds of cognitive and creative labour as new territories of existence and resistance. Based on a thorough critique of the “mode of modulation”, in which we constantly reform and deform ourselves and the worlds around us, the book draws lines of desertion into other, molecular forms of living and organizing. Here and now, the university as a factory of knowledge becomes a place of condensation, of assembly, and of re-appropriation of space, and the industry of creativity turns into a plane of wild, disobedient, non-subservient industriosity.

opening or event start 30.05.2013 19:00

During the first three weeks of Month of Performance Art - Berlin artist Nuno Vicente (Portugal/Berlin) will take a picture of himself at the photo automat machine at Kottbusser Tor and go to the Maybachufer washing the created image in the water, day after day at dawn. All photographs will be collected in a bucket, adding everyday a new manifestation of the same face.

Water explores the definition of performance and investigates the boarder between the personal space and the public sphere per placing intimate ritualistic actions into the vivid public life, blending the audience of chance with the audience of the performance itself. On May 30th the experiences, ideas, encounters, traces and conversations that arise during the performance will be transformed into an exhibition, opening at João Cocteau, Kienitzerstr. 98, 7pm.

The project focuses on communication, distortion and deconstruction of linguistic and cultural forms and crashing multiple, cultural levels in the political context. The plurality of inputs coming out in the surrounding of public spaces, especially in the big cities reveals the idea of tension between certain collective consciousness and individualism. Studies Show that 38 % of our perception is focused on voice, sound, intonation, 55 % on body language and only 7 % on content. This neurosociological phenomenon is being used for political, marketing, strategic reasons on the public TV, speeches, conferences, politics etc.

In the past years the communication studies on visual, acoustic and vocal part of political, business, and diplomatic performance abilities have been developed and play important part in the public life, and in the social structures. The report – message is like a performance, where vocal, visual medium becomes more essential than a message.

42 | Ralf Tekaat

The installation Fortytwo is about the goal to run the Berlin Marathon (42 Kilometers) in September. Currently I am 42 years old. I connect the obsession of running with my obsession to do art, especially my obsession of doing pencil drawings. There are similarities between drawing and running: the slow pace, the steady rhythm line by line, step by step. Sometime You get to the flow and forget that You run or draw. But sometimes it is just pain.
At some point it is as absurd to run 42 kilometers as it is to make pencil drawings in a scale of two by three meters.

It is about Marathon, about MArtha and MArter (torture), about "The Happy Ending of Franz Kafka's Amerika" by MArtin Kippenberger, Amerika (or AkireMA) as a Metaphor of Hope and Glory, about Ma and that there is no MA in cancer.
Of course, it is also about “the answers to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything” (If you’ve read The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, you already know that the answer to said questions is ultimately 42). So I am expecting to become enlightened, at the end, somehow.

Finally, it is also about trying to hold the pace of life itself.

Berlin.Status [2]

Berlin.Status [2] marks the second survey of new tendencies and trends in Berlin’s art scenes, undertaken by the curators Sven Drühl and Christoph Tannert. It will include both a publication launched on Thursday 23 May and an exhibition that runs 23 May - 16 June 2013.

Berlin.Status [2] is dedicated to tomorrow: presenting works by more than 50 artists it permits a look ahead to the potentials of the youngest generation of artists, although they made quite clear even during preparations for the exhibition that there would be no big bang after which everything would be different...

Just as John Donne reported his discovery – that ‘no man is an island, entire of itself’, but ‘a piece of the continent, a part of the main’ – so Thoreau announced that 'the smallest stream is a Mediterranean sea'. In the particular, macro potential is revealed. Since Plato, through Defoe and Swift, via Gauguin, and in the work of numerous contemporary artists the island figure has been employed to negotiate relationships between the real and the imaginary, utopia and dystopia, selfhood and otherness, centre and periphery. This exhibition charts the topography of this intellectual archipelago – interrogating the possibility of isolation in the 21st Century.

Ends 22.06.2013

This new work by Nancy Atakan investigates the extreme routes taken by contemporary individuals and societies to become attractive to others whether it be the opposite sex or foreign investors. Women and men undergo surgery to alter their physical appearance. Politicians promote urban transformation to attract global investment. Plastic surgeons add to and take away from human bodies like sculptors molding clay. Urban developers thoughtlessly demolish communities and ways of life for profit. Societies that place high value on beauty and youth continuously change, disguise and eliminate the ‘Old’ built structure or human body. Violence of this type can be physical or psychological. Atakan uses a variety of techniques including silkscreen, photography, digital prints and digital video to transform discarded objects found in the local flea market.

Ends 02.09.2015

You're invited to follow the amazing global art initiative 'FRAGILE - global performance chain journey' in which more than 750 artists from 62 countries are participating.
Can one fragile object, in times of email, chat and mobility, pass one time all around the world safely – from hand to hand, charging itself with stories and people? Will it be the same when it returns?

For the project, more than 750 artists from all over the world work together in one same action: all will carry one fragile object step by step around the planet.
The journey of the object and the works the artists will conceive during the project will be communicated on the website and in regular newsletters.
