When a solid body meets its natural resonant frequency, it violently vibrates and breaks into pieces. What happens when the human body meets its resonant frequencies? Mostly a combination of soft tissue and water, the human body is not one solid object. It includes a variety of molecules each of which has a different resonant frequency. Yet the soft tissue and water do not allow these molecules to be completely destroyed. Instead, the human body’s liquidity and elasticity perpetuate the fundamental principle of acoustic resonance: holding a multitude of similar frequencies neither as precisely same nor as perfectly different. For the very same reason perhaps, the human body is involved in a constant reciprocity with its sonic environment. Knowingly or unknowingly, it vibrates with multiple other bodies. Without any necessary physical contact, it matches its resonant frequencies from a distance...

After Gasium et Circenses by Katarina Šević und Tehnica Schweiz (Gergely László & Péter Rákosi) REH Kunst is now pleased to present the second act: the live performance The Loser (Version 2) directed by Hungarian artist Hajnal Németh on Wednesday, 5th June. Afterwards an installation of the left stage settings and props, as well as a video installation of the performance will be on view until the 15th June.
In an opera-like vocal enactment of confessions, a politician and a banker are engaged in a Faustian dialogue with their own conscience, discussing their fascination of power, their initial enthusiasm, their beliefs and the loss of it, and the question of responsibility. Berlin.Status [2] marks the second survey of new tendencies and trends in Berlin’s art scenes, undertaken by the curators Sven Drühl and Christoph Tannert. It will include both a publication launched on Thursday 23 May and an exhibition that runs 23 May - 16 June 2013.
Berlin.Status [2] is dedicated to tomorrow: presenting works by more than 50 artists it permits a look ahead to the potentials of the youngest generation of artists, although they made quite clear even during preparations for the exhibition that there would be no big bang after which everything would be different...

By using a square viewfinder this optical assumption of pictorial layout is queried – the viewer requested to look again and adjust to the equilateral perimeter. The square composition, more directly associated with abstract art, thus reshuffles our preconception of figurative space.
“6²“ presents the large-scale, same format canvases of six international artists, Paul Barnett, Nicole Heinzel, Michelle Lloyd, Enda O’ Donoghue, Cameron Rudd and Alex Tennigkeit . All members of the group are based at the Mengerzeile Artists’ Studios in Berlin.

Just as John Donne reported his discovery – that ‘no man is an island, entire of itself’, but ‘a piece of the continent, a part of the main’ – so Thoreau announced that 'the smallest stream is a Mediterranean sea'. In the particular, macro potential is revealed. Since Plato, through Defoe and Swift, via Gauguin, and in the work of numerous contemporary artists the island figure has been employed to negotiate relationships between the real and the imaginary, utopia and dystopia, selfhood and otherness, centre and periphery. This exhibition charts the topography of this intellectual archipelago – interrogating the possibility of isolation in the 21st Century.

This new work by Nancy Atakan investigates the extreme routes taken by contemporary individuals and societies to become attractive to others whether it be the opposite sex or foreign investors. Women and men undergo surgery to alter their physical appearance. Politicians promote urban transformation to attract global investment. Plastic surgeons add to and take away from human bodies like sculptors molding clay. Urban developers thoughtlessly demolish communities and ways of life for profit. Societies that place high value on beauty and youth continuously change, disguise and eliminate the ‘Old’ built structure or human body. Violence of this type can be physical or psychological. Atakan uses a variety of techniques including silkscreen, photography, digital prints and digital video to transform discarded objects found in the local flea market.

LIVING ARCHIVE
Within the framework of the festival LIVING ARCHIVE, KW Institute for Contemporary Art exhibits the results of the project LIVING ARCHIVE – ARCHIVE WORK AS CONTEMPORARY ARTISTIC AND CURATORIAL PRACTICE. The project was initiated in das 2011 by Arsenal –- Institute for Film and Video Art e. V., and offered artists, curators and other researchers the opportunity to develop a contemporary approach to the archive over a period of two years.
The participants present their research and their responses to Arsenal’s collection with screenings, installations, collections of materials and performances. On view are artistic as well as academic approaches to the archive, founded 50 years ago and containing about 8000 cinematic works.

The exhibition shows examinations of found footage in form and content, as well as reflections on the archive as a medium and on archival processes. Susanne Sachsse for example scrutinizes, inspired by a record of Brecht’s DIE MUTTER at Berliner Ensemble theater from 1958, what “serious ladies” might actually mean. Stephan Geene shows in a performance and a film the failure of staging a performative act. Film theorist Sabine Nessel and her class accompany the documentary short film WERNER HERZOG EATS HIS SHOE (Les Blank, 1980) with footage, drawing connecting lines, providing background information and creating new relations. Martin Ebner translates films schematically into objects containing individual information on length and structure, and Florian Zeyfang engages with the image between the cut of two film shots.

Within the framework of the festival LIVING ARCHIVE, KW Institute for Contemporary Art exhibits the results of the project LIVING ARCHIVE – ARCHIVE WORK AS CONTEMPORARY ARTISTIC AND CURATORIAL PRACTICE. The project was initiated in das 2011 by Arsenal –- Institute for Film and Video Art e. V., and offered artists, curators and other researchers the opportunity to develop a contemporary approach to the archive over a period of two years.
The participants present their research and their responses to Arsenal’s collection with screenings, installations, collections of materials and performances. On view are artistic as well as academic approaches to the archive, founded 50 years ago and containing about 8000 cinematic works.

The exhibition shows examinations of found footage in form and content, as well as reflections on the archive as a medium and on archival processes. Susanne Sachsse for example scrutinizes, inspired by a record of Brecht’s DIE MUTTER at Berliner Ensemble theater from 1958, what “serious ladies” might actually mean. Stephan Geene shows in a performance and a film the failure of staging a performative act. Film theorist Sabine Nessel and her class accompany the documentary short film WERNER HERZOG EATS HIS SHOE (Les Blank, 1980) with footage, drawing connecting lines, providing background information and creating new relations. Martin Ebner translates films schematically into objects containing individual information on length and structure, and Florian Zeyfang engages with the image between the cut of two film shots.
