Born in Warsaw (1966), trained in Kowalski's legendary workshop at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts, Artur Żmijewski has been a leading figure of video art since the end of the nineties through a striking series of short works which display the crushed condition of the Western body in our inhuman societies.
He achieved international recognition with the Singing Lesson (I) at the 2002 Frankfurt Manifesta and with Repetition at the 2005 Venice Biennale, a powerful metaphor of our regressive democracies in which the state of exception has become the rule, according to Benjamin's terms, which Agamben has made famous. Artur Żmijewski is curating the 7th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art which is to open soon (April 27 - July 1, 2012). http://www.berlinbiennale.de/

1969 organisierte Seth Siegelaub eine Ausstellung (und Publikation) des Titels January 5 – 31, 1969, eines der ersten Ausstellungsprojekte der conceptual art, damals unter Beteiligung von Robert Barry, Douglas Huebler, Joseph Kosuth und Lawrence Weiner.
Zwar war damals bereits von einem "linguistic turn" die Rede, der sich in der Welt der Visuellen Kunst abspielte und in der Konsequenz zur Ideenkunst führte - dennoch ist kaum von der Hand zu weisen, dass solche künstlerischen/dichterischen Strategien nun um die Jahrtausendwende radikalisiert wiederaufgegriffen werden.
January 5 – 31, 2012 versammelt mit Craig Dworkin, Kenneth Goldsmith
Jonathan Monk und Michalis Pichler einige dieser Positionen.

Der Gedanke vom Blick auf eine Zeichnung, die bei jedem Betrachten neue Aspekte eröffnet, die einen Moment der Veränderung in sich trägt, begleitet diese Ausstellung und verbindet die Tätigkeiten der eingeladenen KünstlerInnen. Sie befragen das Medium Zeichnung nach seinen Möglichkeiten und Grenzen – ein Medium, das in allen Epochen der Kunstgeschichte aufscheint und für das immer neue Einsatzmöglichkeiten erdacht wurden.
Das Wissen über die formalen, prozessorientierten Herangehensweisen der konzeptuellen Zeichnung im Gepäck, wagen es die KünstlerInnen, einen bildhaften und narrativen Bezug zur „Welt“ einzugehen.
