Burnout is increasingly becoming a diagnosis of our achievement-oriented society, for it provides evidence of the willingness to do the utmost and enable what appears to be unworkable, to exceed limits and surpass oneself. The exhibition project “A Burnt-Out Case?” seeks to cast a different view to the phenomenon of burnout that goes beyond the popular, often pseudo-therapeutic discourse.
The project group of the NGBK that conceived and realized “A Burnt-Out Case?” calls for a new and reflected way of dealing with the theme that does not stop with “faster-higher-farther”. A special focus is on the perspective of artists and creatives who often work and live in a precarious environment and are simultaneously considered the precursors of flexibilized and deregulated worlds of work.

Ends 14.10.2012
Using a variety of media; installation, photography, video and drawing, Michelle-Marie Letelier studies landscapes that are subjected to exploitation of mineral resources. Through her work, she has documented social change, and more recently focused on topographic changes, observing the consequences of exploitation in the area. This theme began with the biographical story of the artist who has spent a few years in Chuquicamata, Chile, home of the largest open-pit copper mine in the world. This period has been documented by video and photographs, underlining an atmosphere of loneliness and abandonment, throwing into question the emptiness created by the expansion of the progressive mine, which in reaching the city has forced it to depopulate and die.

Ends 19.10.2012
Transient Luminous is a new body of paintings and videoworks arising from a residency at ateliergemeinshaft Milchhof e.V., Berlin in 2011.
The videowork explores and transforms diverse light forms moving in the studio at Milchhof which are, at times, elusive, mysterious and abstract. These fugitive forms, mapped over the course of 7 months, are suggestive of fleeting thoughts, spaces of illumination and the ephemeral. The light oscillates and moves registering on different levels of conscious/psychic recognition whilst creating strange spatial and temporal possibilities. The paintings also unfold around this engagement with the illumination of ideas through a decisive moment (der Augenblick) and its status of being as transient yet full of potential and significance.

EXPO
Berthelsdorfer Straße 12
12043 Berlin
EXPO is non-commercial project, managed by independent artists and curators, aiming to develop exhibitions with unusual concepts.
http://www.expo-berlin.com
Berlin
Ends 21.10.2012
Started in 2007, the corpus of works presented as part of “Kant Reloaded” is the result of several years of cross-disciplinary research by Giovanni Casu in the field of art, philosophy and neuroscience.
With “Kant Reloaded”, Giovanni Casu questions the immaterial and subjective substance of visual perception. Here, his work plays with and uses the limits of our sensory capacities to make us see what doesn’t exist. It tricks our brain to perceive movements into inanimate and still objects. It creates colors where none should be seen.
At the basis of “Kant Reloaded” was the observation that visual perception is our primary mean of experiencing reality and the will to question its reliability. Here, Giovanni Casu hypothesized that the visual perception of the physical world uses the same mechanics as the construction of our inner and virtual worlds.

Polly’s Picture Show CONFETTI GENERATION
Polly’s Picture Show, a platform for young talented artists that engage with the medium photography, presents its third group exhibition named Confetti Generation in the Vondelparkpavilioen.
This new exhibition of Polly’s Picture Show presents new work of a generation of artists who were all born in the eighties. They belong to the so-called Confetti Generation – a term that became popular in 2010 through an article published in the magazine HP/De Tijd. The Confetti Generation is characterized by excessiveness. The many different colours of confetti continuously offer new sentiments, which combine to make a party. The Confetti Generation assumes everything is going to be alright; is indifferent, individualistic, and disengaged. The article suggests that the Confetti Generation is not restricted by any boundaries.

E.B., the protagonist of the last video by the Roman artist Elena Bellantoni (1975), plays a life story and reenacts a family story; while defining herself, she gives sense and meaning to her family unit and to her role within it.
Looking for E.B. puts the viewer into an awkward emotional world, in which the audio is punchy, the definition of the objects is meticulous and E.B.’s movements are at the same time fearful and wary.
The use of the double video projection, which strengthens a sympathetic feeling towards the protagonist, and the employ of close-ups, which highlight repeated and almost dubbed gestures, create an indissoluble link between the main character and the female context, in which she acts, but also stress the anxiety of being confronted with the self, first as a being and then as a woman...

Outside of personal romance, collaboration is perhaps the most elemental form of politics—just consider how the term plays a hand in issues as basic as "two heads are better than one" and as large as international alliances. To crack open this power relation, Surplus Authors looks at a group of artists whose work traces and delineates several fault lines inherent in the act of collaboration from (art) historical and social indebtedness, to trust, generosity, incentives, antagonism, and even cooption. Without laying claim to any illustrative narratives, Surplus Authors presents itself during a growing urge and call for institutions to work together as a promised means to alleviate the reasons for austerity. As a possible retort, Surplus Authors begs the question: Is collaboration an end in and of itself, or is it a tenuous and unfolding process in which psychological, intellectual, and political dynamics are contested and reconstituted?

The exhibition will include Untitled Slide Sequence, the recently edited California Stories, 1973-1979, and four films: Performance Under Working Conditions (1973), Talk Given by Mr. Fred Lux . . . (1974), The Forgotten Space (2010), co-directed with Noël Burch, and Lottery of the Sea (2006).

FICTIONS AND DISSENTIONS
Turkey being closely watched from a global perspective has become a focus of attention, not only because of its own political and cultural state of affairs, but because of "The Arabic Spring" in the region, Iran's bid for nuclear power, its approaches and response to various countries in turmoil such as Iraq and Syria in a post-U.S.A. world politics and no doubt its dynamic relations with The EU.

100 years ago, in 1912, Wassily Kandinsky published in the almanac "The Blue Rider" a text which seems to be a manifest on founding sound art - at least a foreshadowing of sound art. His writing "Über Bühnenkomposition" (On stage composition) is a theoretical preface on a planned stage piece called "Der gelbe Klang" (The yellow sound) and in this text he postulated a new connection between the arts, an "inner" connection of "sound, color, words" and movement. His piece was never realised in his lifetime.
The installation Der gelbe Klang2 (The yellow sound2) as a homage to Kandinsky takes his conceptual ideas and makes a transfer into a contemporary sound art piece. Georg Klein often works in his sound art installations with a certain color which defines togehter with a basic sound a fundamental atmosphere of a specific site, preparing a field in which more material - sounds, words, video - can appear.

Can one fragile object, in times of email, chat and mobility, pass one time all around the world safely – from hand to hand, charging itself with stories and people? Will it be the same when it returns?
For the project, more than 750 artists from all over the world work together in one same action: all will carry one fragile object step by step around the planet.
The journey of the object and the works the artists will conceive during the project will be communicated on the website and in regular newsletters.
