Ends 10.06.2012

As soon as Australian skateboarder Oliver Percovich arrived in Kabul in 2007, he was surrounded by the eager faces of children of all ages who wanted to be shown how to skate. This passion for skateboarding in
Afghanistan ultimately caused the formation of the very first skateboard school in the country: Skateistan.

Skateistan – The Tale of Skateboarding in Afghanistan has its official release on the 9th of June at the German Center for Architecture („Deutsches Zentrum fuer Architektur“ – DAZ) in Berlin, and will be available on Amazon US, in Skateistan‘s own online store, and in selected stores world wide. All proceeds of the sale of this book will be used for the realisation of further Skateistan projects. The founder of Skateistan, Oliver Percovich, will fly in from Kabul to open the event personally and share his own stories about the project.

In the lecture Gene Ray will introduce the idea of three models for producing radical culture against the recuperative powers and neutralizing tendencies of the capitalist art system associated with Adorno, Brecht and Debord. The text „Art and Resistance”
http://scurvytunes.blogspot.com/2010/11/art-and-resistance.html is freely accessible online, can serve as a basic statement for anyone who wants or needs background reading beforehand.
In the workshop participants will go beyond the presentation and develop an understanding of how each model works today and what are the strengths and advantages, limitations and risks of each one. The workshop is hands on and participative and deepens the understanding of critical theory.
On the second day participants are asked to find and bring in examples of each model to share and discuss. Everyone will be asked to perform a modified spectrum line, each person finding through discussion and ‘occupying’ a position with respect to each model...

The topic is "SUPER- SUPER CITY".

The modern city is more than just a thickly settled agglomeration of architectural and engineering structures. It is a metropolis, absorbing millions of inhabitants. It is a settlement subordinated to the logic of industrial development. It is a small town, where time glides. It is a habitat that have known better days and unneeded now.
According to the rules of formal logic a double statement is not a denial, but merely reinforces the statement. However, contrary to logic, whether a double statement is a denial or a statement depends on intonation. The intonation is determined by an artist.

Take a Dream on a Sunday
Friday May 25, 8 pm, 9 pm, 10 pm

At the junction Randolph and Desplaines Street, the Haymarket Square, in 1886 battles were fought, from which the May 1st emerged as a celebration of labor. It was fought for the enforcement of the eight-hour day. The “Haymarket Riots“ were brutally suppressed. “Made in America“ is a track from the Jay-Z and Kanye West published hip-hop album “Watch the Throne“, which appeared in 2011. Along with Warren Buffet, Jay-Z is one of the richest men in the United States. He is of African-American descent, grew up in the ghetto of Brooklyn NY, and – with his colleague Kanye West – has discussed the pride to, have “made it“ in America. To me, the title “Made in America“ represents the contradictions of the “American Dream“.

Also: Ran an den Ernst!

Prosthesis 9t

Die raum
Oderberger Straße 56
Berlin

http://dieraum.net/
http://www.marioasef.net/

Berlin

Ends 23.06.2012

Prosthesis 9t is part of an ongoing body of work titled Spacial Prosthetics, which seek to create a physical as well as symbolic extension of architectural spaces. For his installation in die raum Mario Asef has “expropriated” insulation boards from a local building site. The polystyrene slabs are then used to construct improvised seating, which transforms the exhibition space into a 24 hour social meeting point. Removing the facade completely the installation underlines the ambiguous position of the space as something in between the public and the private.
Prosthesis 9t represents an organic cycle of shifts in function and symbolic value, which goes beyond die raum in time and space. The polystyrene slabs - originally intended for a fixed position as insulation of a house – will deteriorate during the exhibition period, and continue the cycle “reinserted” into public space after the end of the show.

The Flesh is a magazine created in 2008 by Yann Géraud and Damien Mazières with the purpose to print, to give to read or to study groups of texts, images, reproductions or facsimiles, without previously considering its use value. Filled with the will to spread thoughts without hierarchy or authority, the magazine’s space defines itself for us like a space manifesto, meaning the location of the proclamation, the location of the things’ vision. The Flesh is a magazine that does materialize itself through the lack of themes, a subject’s lack deliberately claimed. The Flesh proposes a concretely abstract gaze...

Then on Monday, June 4th, 8pm at WestGermany in collaboration with Interflugs, ArtLeaks will co-host a workshop in which we would like to focus on specific cases submitted to our platform, and what we may learn from these instances of abuse and exploitation to create an international front of solidarity to struggle for cultural workers’ rights. How can we then challenge ourselves to re-imagine fairer relationships to institutions, organizations, networks and economies involved in the production and consumption of art and culture? In addressing these concerns as a group, we will develop themes that will form the bases of ArtLeaks’ upcoming publication, a journal which will be entirely dedicated to censorship, cultural workers’ rights and formulating strategies and goals of organizing cultural workers.

100 years ago, in 1912, Wassily Kandinsky published in the almanac "The Blue Rider" a text which seems to be a manifest on founding sound art - at least a foreshadowing of sound art. His writing "Über Bühnenkomposition" (On stage composition) is a theoretical preface on a planned stage piece called "Der gelbe Klang" (The yellow sound) and in this text he postulated a new connection between the arts, an "inner" connection of "sound, color, words" and movement. His piece was never realised in his lifetime.

The installation Der gelbe Klang2 (The yellow sound2) as a homage to Kandinsky takes his conceptual ideas and makes a transfer into a contemporary sound art piece. Georg Klein often works in his sound art installations with a certain color which defines togehter with a basic sound a fundamental atmosphere of a specific site, preparing a field in which more material - sounds, words, video - can appear.

You're invited to follow the amazing global art initiative 'FRAGILE - global performance chain journey' in which more than 750 artists from 62 countries are participating.
Can one fragile object, in times of email, chat and mobility, pass one time all around the world safely – from hand to hand, charging itself with stories and people? Will it be the same when it returns?

For the project, more than 750 artists from all over the world work together in one same action: all will carry one fragile object step by step around the planet.
The journey of the object and the works the artists will conceive during the project will be communicated on the website and in regular newsletters.
