EDGE FUND, Radical funding for radical change
We are committed to equality, and recognise the inherent inequalities involved in philanthropy. When society’s inequalities have been dissolved, the philanthropy of the wealthy will no longer exist. We are committed to creating new and more sustainable sources of funding based on the solidarity of the many, rather than the generosity of the few. We also aim to challenge traditional grant-making values and practices by being pioneering and providing a model that can be followed by others.
In the first round, grants are not likely to be more than £5,000 and for UK-based groups only.
How to apply:
http://edgefund.org.uk/how-to-apply/
The Edge Fund is a grant-making body with a difference. We support efforts to achieve social, economic and environmental justice and to end imbalances in wealth and power – and give those we aim to help a say in where the money goes.
Existing financial and political systems benefit the privileged few and put profit and economic growth before people and the environment. To challenge these inequalities effectively, we believe it is critical that decisions are made collectively, by those who donate money and those who receive it. To this end the Edge Fund consists of donors, activists and members of communities facing oppression and injustice. The Edge Fund also creates opportunities for people to build alliances with each other and share their learning and experiences.

SoftControl Competition
•Application Deadline
09.12.2012
This call for entries is open for proposals which will mark the Museum’s presence in its neighbourhood, abandoning traditional commemorative approaches and permanent sculptural solutions, transforming ‘passive’ narratives into physical and symbolic presence, by concentrating on current social issues and relations or connecting with everyday life practice on the borderline between public and private, facts and fiction.
In the sense of media, the project supports performative and participatory works, urban interventions and outdoor installations whose audience – users or participants – cannot be predetermined. What is required: to explore approaches which use the public space to open and address the public which does not belong to the standard circuit of art events, but includes passers-by, neighbours, current visitors of streets and squares. By treating physical and symbolic distances between the artist / artwork and different ‘publics’.

SOFTCONTROL 2012-2015
http://www.softcontrol.info/
Starting from the often mentioned detachment of the museum zone, displacement from the public space as a consequence of involvement in programmatic tasks of collecting and safekeeping, this project raises the question of the manner of reactivating the public space and the artist’s presence in it.
In the wake of the initiative for different regulation of social space and leisure time, this project is interested in contemporary art practices which disturb the status quo and underline concealed, transposed or neglected contents in urban environment, regardless of the approach or medium the artists use.

Between|Worlds. Atmospheres of video games
•Application Deadline
15.12.2012
The publication project is underlain by the simple observation that the video game industry went through profound changes in the last five to ten years. At the latest since the early 2000’s, game developers began anew to discover and exhaust the potentials of the medium of the video game. More and more games – often designed in the independent gaming scene – move traditional game mechanisms – time-, decision- and configuration-critical queries to the players – into the background in favor of an emphasized ‚Erlebnishaftigkeit‘ – the presence of a (gaming) experience, so to speak. Thus, video games like Shadow of the Colossus (2006), Braid, The Void (both in 2009), Amnesia: The Dark Descent (2010), Bastion, Limbo, Trauma (all in 2011), Anna, Botanicula, Home and Lone Survivor (all in 2012) – as well as many others – offer a gaming experience that is clearly targeting on an atmospheric effect...
Up till now, hermeneutic examinations, that make use of the interpretative methods of literary studies and ludological structure analysis, couldn't do justice to the meaning and variety of this trend and its subjects.
The proposal submissions (max. 5,000 characters) will be checked by the editors. The abstracts should contain a title, the author’s name, institution and address.
Submission of abstracts: 15 December 2012
Confirmation till: 15 January 2013
Submission of full text: 31 May 2013
Planned publication: Summer 2013
Please send your proposals to: atmosphaeren[@]googlemail.com

What is realism? In the context of this call it is work which provides an illusionistic or highly descriptive representation of some visible subject. Whether that be by painting, drawing, sculpture, or other media, it is nevertheless closely aligned to what the eye sees - tangible subject matter, with little distortion, subjective interpretation, or other manipulation of visible 'facts.' This is not to say works cannot nor should not have content, meaning, and drama, nor that they cannot include other non-realistic components. In fact, the 'real' that is depicted could be invented. The goal however is to convince the viewer by way of the art that the work represents something that exists outside the art itself.
Manifest stands for the quality presentation, experience, and documentation of the visual arts, engaging students, professionals, and the public from around the world through accessible world-class exhibits, studio programs, and publications.

Video Project: Le TGV en 50 secondes
•Application Deadline
31.12.2012
The project of this video demonstration is a homage to the Lumière brothers and the recognition of the fundamental role which the train had and has in the development of the voyage.
We are sure that “L'arrivée d'un train en gare de La Ciotat”, a short of 50 seconds, was the first art film in the history. In its brevity, it takes on the cinematographic language and attests the social development in the sense of modernity, interpreted as freedom of collective and fast voyage.
CO.AR.CO. will dedicate its activity of the cultural season 2012 at the realization of an artists’ video collection on the topic of the TGV. The videos, just like the original film of the Lumière brothers “L'Arrivée d'un train en gare de La Ciotat”, have a length of 50 seconds (+ generic titles) developing the subject of a travel by train.

Non-Participation: Call for Submissions
•Application Deadline
31.12.2012
Historic instances and examples include: Adrian Piper’s letter announcing her withdrawal from the show Reconsidering the Object of Art: 1965-1975 at LA MoCA, stating her opposition to Phillip Morris’ funding of the museum and requesting that her criticizing statement be publicly shown; A letter from Jo Baer to a Whitney Museum curator canceling an upcoming exhibition on the grounds that her work was not being taken seriously because she is a woman artist; Marcel Broodthaers open letter to Joseph Beuys questioning the relationship between artists and exhibiting institutions; and, just recently, critic Dave Hickey‘s public announcement of his “quitting” the art world.

The project, Non-Participation, will be a collection of letters by artists, curators, and other cultural producers, written to decline their participation in events, or with organizations and institutions which they either find suspect or whose actions run counter to their stated missions. These statements are in effect protests against common hypocrisies among cultural organizations, and pose a positive alternative to an equally ubiquitous pressure to perform. At the heart of the project is the notion that what we say “no” to is perhaps more important than what we agree to.
