Open Call for Proposal - EGO?
•Application Deadline
05.01.2011
Visual artists and curators are invited to propose projects for 2012.
In 2012 Århus Kunstbygning wishes to make room for proposals for artistic thinking and praxis that attempt to work towards an inclusive, tolerant and holistic understanding of the self; that is, definitions of the subject that do not have the aim of warning us against parts of the self deemed unacceptable by society and its norms.
Århus Kunstbygning's intention to turn the focus on the self-revelation in art today that honours no culturally predetermined modesty thresholds, aims like this example at self-revelations that work outside a homogenizing discourse and towards an affirmative complexity.
We are looking for proposals for group exhibitions and solo exhibitions, recent or older films and performances.

StreetFest Competition
•Application Deadline
15.01.2011
Prefabricated tenting structures have proliferated in the last years as the only solution to temporary affordable outdoor shelter. The resulting landscape of street fairs or temporary events throughout cities and neighborhoods has been a spatially, geometrically, chromatically, and materially homogeneous environment that simply enables activities to happen without generating a playful engagement with the city or its citizens.
This competition asks for designs that envision street tents not only as shelters but also as active elements within the collective construction and understanding of the city. StreetFest makes a call to Architects, Artists and Engineers to re-envision the performativity-the material, social, and educational possibilities-of temporary outdoor structures.
http://www.storefrontnews.org/exhibitions_events/events?c=&p=&e=415
The Festival of Ideas for a New City is a major new collaborative initiative between scores of downtown organizations, from large universities to arts groups and community organizations, working together to affect change. The Festival is a first for New York and will demonstrate the power of the creative community to imagine the city of the future. The Festival will serve as a platform for artists, architects, designers, and other thought leaders to exchange ideas, propose solutions, create new problems, and invite the public to participate in improving urban life.
The Festival of Ideas for a New City will take place during the weekend of May 7-8, 2011, and will include panels, roundtables, symposia, and workshops; an innovative outdoor "street fair"; and dozens of projects, performances, and events, opening simultaneously at multiple downtown venues.

20.01.2011
JAN 20, 19:30. LECTURE: FRANCO CASSANO, IL MONDO VISTO DA SUD

JAN 27- 28. CONFERENCE: THE UNSETTLED IMAGE THURSDAY,
http://www.ici-berlin.org/index.php?RDCT=c207577c787bf0dddaf4
============================================================
The Weimar years are widely considered to have been marked by a flourish
of media optimism, particularly with regard to photography. But to what
extent was the era’s great creativity in these media a result of
misgivings as well as enthusiasm? This Workshop aims to outline these
countervailing tensions circling around photography. It will offer a
series of substantive case studies in which photography, either as a
practice or paradigm, failed to accommodate the multifaceted complexity
of modernity and therefore required far more invention, including an
appeal to the non-visual senses.
http://www.ici-berlin.org/
The Berlin Institute for Cultural Inquiry is an independent centre for research and culture dedicated to exploring how diverse cultures can be brought into productive rather than pernicious confrontation. It takes 'culture' in a broad sense to include cultures associated with different identities (such as age, class, ethnicity, gender, nationality, race, religion, sexuality), spaces (such as city, internet, work) or discourses (such as art, economics, law, media, politics, science). It understands 'culture' as a contested and problematic notion and remains open to its various meanings in relation to other terms (such as implicit knowledge, nature, signifying practice, structure of feeling, ways of life).

Curatorial studies at Node Center Berlin: Call for applications
•Application Deadline
30.01.2011
The Node Center for Curatorial Studies is a platform of formation, experimentation, and diffusion in the field of curatorship and in the contemporary artistic practices.
Node is launching a Curatorial Studies Residency Program for research and practice in curatorial studies. The program understands curatorship as exhibition praxis, allowing direct experimentation with the exhibition space. Additionally, the program will be reinforced with activities such as workshops, seminars, meetings with cultural agents, art shows, and visits to exhibition spaces.
Moreover, participants are expected to take an active role in organizing the program (i.e., managing seminars, workshops, guest lectures, exhibitions, etc.).
The residents registered within the Node Center's studies program will develop specific theoretical-practical research during their residency. Each quarter, the center will be immersed in a specific line of research.
During the period of March-June 2011, the line of the program will be: "The logic of the limit: transversal curatorial processes". The different lines of research explore the curatorial practices that expand their own mechanisms beyond the normal "taxonomic" processes of the art exhibition (i.e., classification, study, and exhibition), generating new discursive possibilities.
During that period, the residents will enjoy a shared office to develop their own theoretical investigation, and an experimental practice area for exhibitions.
Applying
An application form, information about tuition, and instructions for applying can be obtained at the Center's website: http://www.nodecenter.org
To be eligible participants must submit an application by January 30th 2011:

PAULINA OLSZEWSKA
> During this edition of flashlights’ workshops I would like to concentrate
on the both artists as well as curators and their role in creating
any kind of art event. Looking through the history of contemporary art
and curating itself I will analyze few examples and try make
a critical comment to them. The idea of these workshops
will circulate around few questions:
“What does it exactly mean ‘to curate?’ ”;
“What is the role of artists in process of creating exhibition?”;
“What kind of role do the curators play?”
and the most controversial:
“Whose ideas and vision are more important:
these given by the artists
or these made by the curators?”,
which will be put up for a discussion.

PILOTENKUECHE artist residency - Spring 2012
•Application Deadline
16.11.2011
PILOTENKUECHE is an Artist Residency Program based on group dynamic. Six-to-eight artists each work on their individual projects during a three-and-a-half month period at the Spinnerei in Leipzig. Each has their own working area within the 312 m2 (1,023 ft2) communal studio. Every Round of the residency ends as a group exhibition during one of the three gallery weekends at the Spinnerei.
PILOTENKUECHE wishes to provide our participants with the experience of accomplishing something as a group; and, moreover, in experimenting with new forms of cooperation vital in fostering an independent position in one's work.
We encourage the participants to work and be present on site as much as possible during the duration of the residency. When committing to this project, the artist must agree to stay the duration of the term (it is not possible to stay just a few weeks, etc.) Regardless, the participant is responsible for paying the entire participation fee.
Accommodation and travel costs are not provided, but we can help you finding a room and organizing your stay in Leipzig. Although PILOTENKUECHE is a non-profit project, there is a participation fee of 900 Euros to be paid by each artist to cover the costs of the studio space and advertising the round of the residency.

Independently writing: from Samizdat to the Zines
Starting from a historical overview about the soviet Samizdat during the Cold War, we will together try to understand, what is a Zine and why it is fundamental in our current world in comparison to the communist society. Even though during the Samizdat movement the circulation of independent magazines was not permitted, nowadays the Internet gives us only apparently infinite possibilities of distribution.
We will talk about censorship today and we will essay topics for an ideal contemporary Zine.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samizdat
Some starting points of discussion for the ideal creation of a fanzine/magazine are:
Why a Zine nowadays?
Which is our audience?
Which layout does it need in order to have a congruent diffusion?
Which contents are suitable for our society today?
ELEONORA FARINA - Italian art historian and curator, graduated in History of Contemporary Art from “La Sapienza” University in Rome with a MA dissertation about the Kunsthalle Portikus in Frankfurt am Main. After her one-year-long job experience at MNAC - National Museum of Contemporary Art in Bucharest (thanks to the European 'Leonardo da Vinci' grant), she is now dedicating her PhD research to the experimental Video Art in Romania in the Seventies and Eighties during the Ceauşescu’s dictatorship (Freie Universität, Berlin).

This year, for the second time, the Catalyst Award, founded by tranzit. hu, will be handed out.
The award is given to individuals, projects, and initiatives which, directly or indirectly, have an impact on the contemporary art scene – they contribute to the presentation, discussion and mediation of art with their progressive approach of form or substance. The award equally recognises progressive initiatives without institutional background or support, as well as initiatives emerging within an institutional framework.
The goal of the Catalyst Award is to enhance the appreciation, and its collective character, of inspiring artistic initiatives.
In 2011, the founder invites nominations for the Catalyst Award in two categories:
1. motor (initiatives which have been active for a long time, but function, or functioned, as a catalyst);
2. novelty (initiatives of the recent past which are considered to be catalysts).
•Application Deadline
30.11.2011
The nomination is open to everyone and is until November 30, 12pm.
The Catalyst Award consists of a prize of HUF 500,000 per project, and a prize designed by an artist.
