HMK {Hotel Mariakapel} is an artist-run residency and project space in Hoorn, just 40 km north of Amsterdam. HMK receives artists from all over the world.

The programme involves artists and curators working in a wide range of media, focusing on installation and context based work, video and performance art. Residencies
For 2012 we have applications open for four group residencies for artists.
We are looking for projects that make full use of the unique opportunities offered.

Proposals must focus mainly on content of the work and the process of working resulting in a presentation in our chapel/exhibition space, please do not propose to exhibit pre-existing work.

Research Residencies
For 2012 we have applications open for two research residencies.

* Artist(s) with a special interest in public art and or artistic interventions in public space.

For both Research Residencies we are looking for individuals or duo's (no groups) who seek to spend time on research and development of their work trough focusing on a self chosen research topic. We are, again, keen on projects that do not only focus on it's own topic or medium but that, in content or practice, are able to step outside the borders of their own context.

International Kansk Video Festival: Call for entries
•Application Deadline

01.06.2011

International Kansk Video Festival (Russia/Siberia) is not a conventional
film festival. It is an experiment in time and space. The place…. the
small Siberian city of Kansk, was found on the Internet by chance and
selected as its name correlates with the Cannes Film Festival, Kansk in
the Russian language is pronounced the same as Cannes. I grew as an
artistic joke….Siberia having it’s own ‘Festival de Cannes’.

Kansk Video Festival provides a social platform for alternative and
innovative films, its producing and promoting. Those works are beyond the
bounds of mainstream in cinematography, as well in contemporary art.

Kansk Video Festival is international competition of films, videos and
video-art, also of adjoining genres in visual art, on the border between
cinema and contemporary art.

Kansk Video Festival is art-territory and anti-Hollywood.

MANIFEST EXHIBIT PROPOSALS: Solo, Two-person, Group and Concept Submissions
•Application Deadline

01.06.2011

On average one-third of Manifest's exhibits are dedicated to solo exhibits. Solo exhibitors have included local, regional, and national artists from as far away as New York City and San Francisco. It is important that each of our seasons of free public exhibits consist of a balanced mix of solo and group thematic projects. The group shows provide diversity of approach, media, style, and geographic origin, while the solo exhibits provide a deeper insight into one artist's vision.

Manifest is eager to receive proposals of various types, including any genre or media, and accepts these on an ongoing basis, reviewing them starting in early June in consideration for the upcoming season. The organization is a 501(c)(3) charitable non-profit and as such operates on a very lean budget, so all submissions to gallery calls and proposals for exhibits include modest entry/submission fees.

In general gallery assignments are decided by the curatorial staff when planning the season. Proposals may suggest a gallery, or indicate the need for a specific type of space. For example, our Parallel Space gallery can be made completely dark even during daytime. But exhibit size and location will be determined by the curatorial staff at the time of season planning.

Types of proposals:

- Solo exhibits

- Two person exhibits

- Group shows

- Curatorial project (call for entries proposal by curator)

watch & talk 2011 Residential Project for Young Performing Artists
•Application Deadline

01.06.2011

watch & talk, the residential project by Migros Culture Percentage and the Zürcher Theater Spektakel, invites eight young performing artists to a 10-day residential project on the Landiwiese in Zurich. Visits to performances, group discussions, reflection on one's own artistic production – watch & talk is a personal challenge which pushes to the limits. The exchange in the group and with participating artists opens new perspectives on performance style, political approaches, aesthetics, ethics and one's own work.

The young artists have the opportunity to reflect on their own work methods through discussion with others. Results from this confrontation can include: the discovery of new work methods, the emergence of new questions and the urge to tackle them. The format is divided into three sections. In the morning, the individual work methods are presented to the group members.

This takes place through practical rehearsals and exercises on the stage. In the afternoon, the focus is on the discussion of what has been seen, meetings with artists performing at the festival and group readings of theoretical texts. The subsequent performance attendance enables an intense and comprehensive insight into the current world of theatre.

With watch & talk, Migros Culture Percentage and the Zürcher Theater Spektakel offer young artists the luxury of being able to work for 10 days without any production pressure.

In Place of War : call for submissions for the anthology of plays
•Application Deadline

01.06.2011

In Place of War researches theatre and performance practice from sites of crisis and armed conflict. The first decade of the 21 st century has witnessed multiple wars and humanitarian crises - connected to the instabilities of economic globalization, historical political grievance, global structural inequity and new forms of ecological threat. While the events of our contemporary 'times of blood and crime' are not without historical precedent, they have never before had such evident global reach, impact and interconnectedness.

We are inviting submissions for an anthology of plays related to war and conflict zones from across the globe. To be considered for inclusion in the anthology, works should focus on responses to conflict, historical memory, displacement, experiences of refugees and asylum seekers, conflict resolution, peace, transitional justice and reconciliation. The plays should be from the conflict zones themselves, by people living and working in those regions

The plays will be considered by a panel of leading theatre practitioners, directors and academics for inclusion in an anthology of war plays to be published in 2011/12. Special interest is in receiving more plays from authors from these countries: Serbia, Sudan, Palestine, Bosnia, Kosovo, Israel, Colombia, African nations.

Plays will be accepted in any language, however, for those unavailable in English a short synopsis in English would be appreciated. They are looking for plays written in the last 20 years and they would like the playwrights to be from the country the play is based on; playwrights who have experienced the conflict first hand.

Please note fees will not be payed for the plays selected for the Anthology.

To answer this call, please email to ruth.daniel@manchester.ac.uk
* your play
* a short synopsis
* and your country of origin

Teach You, Teach Me: a research on the presence and potential of alternative uses of technology in everyday life
•Application Deadline

10.06.2011

Belgrade, Friday 10th - Monday 14th of June 2011
Cultural Centre REX, Jevrejska 16

TEACH YOU, TEACH ME:
A RESEARCH ON THE PRESENCE AND POTENTIAL
OF ALTERNATIVE USES
OF TECHNOLOGY IN EVERYDAY LIFE,
ON THE STREETS OF BELGRADE

Make me! festival will feature a series of workshops on building and using
different DIY devices, with a critical reflection on the presence of
technology in public space. The workshops are intended for tech-savvy women and girls but also enthusiasts of all genders with no previous knowledge.
Artists and activists gathered around independent, self-organised
initiatives from the Netherlands, Austria and Serbia will teach a wide range
of subjects, from listening to electromagnetic waves and analysis of
wireless Internet traffic to the use of satellite signal for GPS and solar
energy. Through one and two days workshops where "everyone teaches everyone", we will play with the potential of alternative uses of technology in everyday life.

The workshops are meant to enable and encourage the participants to work with everyday technology and adapt it to their needs. They are not expected to show high technical literacy but curiousity to get to know and possibly modify technology that is available to everyone.

The target group are primarily girls with an experience in some kind of
activism and an interest in art and technology. It is expected from the
participants to share the interest in 'breaking the box' and 'looking
inside', and to have an affinity towards learning new skills.

The workshops will take place over the course of 4 days, with two or three
workshops sometimes running in parallel. The main programme is meant for
women only. It is thought of as a 'women for women' exchange of knowledge.
The programme would be open for participation of everyone interested, with
the idea to open up our activities and content to everyone we are sharing
our environment with.

Call for Submissions: Journal for Artistic Research
•Application Deadline

15.06.2011

JAR invites original submissions that actively contribute to the field of research in the arts. The journal welcomes documentary reflections on artistic research practice from across and between the various disciplines in the arts, and from contributors working in academic or non-academic contexts. Its specific aim is to expose artistic practice as research.

With the aim of displaying and documenting practice in a manner that respects artists' modes of presentation, JAR is the first journal supported by a specially developed online software, the Research Catalogue. JAR abandons the traditional journal article format and offers its contributors a dynamic online canvas where text can be woven together with image, audio and video material. The result is a journal which provides a unique 'reading' experience while fulfilling the expectations of scholarly dissemination.

JAR is guided by an editorial board that works with a large panel of international editors and peer reviewers from the field of artistic research.

Conference on Practice-Based Research in Art & Design: Call for works
•Application Deadline

15.06.2011

Practice Based Research in Art & Design / Conference, 1-3 December,

Since the 1990s, numerous art colleges and universities in Europe have established degree programmes in Artistic Research and Design Research. These programmes encourage artists and designers to develop their own epistemological and methodical approaches to concrete problems which differ from purely scientific and artistic /design approaches. In view of the different forms of these disciplines and the development of PhD programmes at various universities, it appears that interdisciplinary, hybrid forms of knowledge and their corresponding methods can neither be comprehensively depicted nor disciplinarily organized.

At this conference on practice-based research in art and design, we wish to demonstrate the research methods in creative processes, artistic strategies, their results and artefacts, and discuss how they may be integrated into our academic classification system.

Call for Presentations: Projects from practice-based artistic-design PhD programmes and independent working contexts whereart, design and science overlap.
Please submit your presentation proposals using the provided online form to: presentations@practicebased-research.com by 15 June, 2011.

Call for Workshops: Theory and practice of research-based processes where art, design and science overlap.
Please submit your workshop proposals using the provided online form to:

The deadline for proposals is June 16, 2011.

For guidelines, helpful hints, and FAQs, please visit our website at
http://EasternState.org/artguidelines

Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site was once the most famous and expensive prison in the world, but stands today in ruin, a haunting world of crumbling cellblocks and empty guard towers.
Known for its grand architecture and strict discipline, this was the world's first true "penitentiary," a prison designed to inspire penitence, or true regret, in the hearts of convicts.

Its vaulted, sky-lit cells once held many of America's most notorious criminals, including bank robber Willie Sutton and Al Capone.

Tours today include the cellblocks, solitary punishment cells, Al Capone's Cell, and Death Row. A critically-acclaimed series of artist installations is free with admission.

Proposal Deadline (for all funding and approvals): Thursday, June 16, 2011, 4:00 pm At Eastern State Penitentiary: Attn: Sean Kelley Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site 2027 Fairmount Avenue Philadelphia, PA 19130

•Application Deadline

20.06.2011

The HISK offers a postgraduate course in visual and audiovisual art. The institute provides 24 young artists from Belgium and abroad with a studio of their own for two years. The emphasis at the institute lies on individual practice. The programme aims to achieve a practical balance between study in the studio, discussions with visiting lecturers, workshops, reading groups, field trips and public presentations. The international and culturally diverse composition of the candidate laureate group makes for cross-pollination and dialogue. The diversity of the international visiting lecturers (artists, curators, critics, theoreticians...), provides a framework within which the candidate laureates learn to view their own work with a critical eye. The unique HISK concept allows participants every opportunity to invest in critical research for their work within a broader artistic, cultural and societal context.

Artists who have already obtained a Masters degree in Fine Art or an equivalent qualification are eligible to apply to the HISK. Exceptions can be made for applicants who do not have a Master degree but display a high level of development, motivation and artistic affinity.

The conceptual and visual qualities in the works submitted by applicants are considered to be more important than style, material or technique. Participants are expected to have a strong commitment to conducting critical research within their respective fields of interest. At the same time, they should aim towards locating their practice within a broader perspective of social and cultural environments. Candidates are also expected to make a contribution to the activities of the HISK as a whole. This interaction is seen to be an important forum of exchange and development.

International Call for Submissions: Ethnographic Terminalia 2011, Montréal
•Application Deadline

24.06.2011

The terminus is the end, the boundary, and the border; of course the terminus is also a beginning as well as its own place, its own site of experience and encounter.

Ethnographic Terminalia is an initiative that brings artists and anthropologists together to engage emerging research through installation and exhibition. As a platform from which divergent modes and methodologies of inquiry are articulated, Ethnographic Terminalia asks what lies within and beyond disciplinary territories, and how those boundaries shape the representation of cultural practice. Organized as a para-site to the annual Meetings of the American Anthropological Association, the gallery show will take place in Montréal, Canada, at Eastern Bloc Centre for New Media and Interdisciplinary Art (14-20 November 2011).

Now in its third year, Ethnographic Terminalia represents a diversity of material, conceptual, and creative engagements with art and anthropology, capturing a multiplicity of mediums where anthropology and art intersect. These include: sound, drawing, sculpture, photography, printmaking, video, film, internet and multi-media, and engage both gallery spaces and site-specific locations.

We seek projects in any medium for inclusion in Ethnographic Terminalia 2011 that take up the theme: field, studio, lab. These three locations–the field, the studio, the lab–comprise both their own communities of practice, and form sites of inquiry and production for artists and anthropologists.

radioCona OPEN CALL: radio art & sound art works
•Application Deadline

25.06.2011

In the frame of the radioCona project Radio As An Arts Space, CONA Institute for Contemporary Arts Processing is sending out an open call for submission of contemporary sound art works from the area of radio art and sound art. Artists and art groups creating in the area of radio art and sound art are invited to apply with existing or new works. Selected works will be included in the exhibition Radio As An Arts Space which will be broadcast by radioCona and will appear at in situ locations in December 2011. Radio As An Arts Space investigates the possibilities of a constitution of an international radio project model for artistic contents and exchange of audio works.

Our aim is to stimulate discourse about the production of radiophonic art projects and discursive artistic contents among expert audiences, artists, and art organisations. The project Radio As An Arts Space will examine how a radio frequency can become a gallery space for contemporary art and analyse the constitution of a format of temporary radio broadcasting, as one of the options.

Open Call for Nominations: Artes Mundi 5 International Exhibition and Prize 2012
•Application Deadline

26.06.2011

Nominations of artists are now invited for Artes Mundi 5, the international exhibition and prize held in 2012 at the National Museum of Art in Cardiff. Nominations close on 26 June 2011.

One artist will receive the 40,000 GBP prize and the other five shortlisted artists will receive a new award of 4,000 GBP each. In addition to being one of the largest prizes in the visual arts, Artes Mundi has established a new longterm partnership with Mostyn in North Wales to develop a solo exhibition with one of the shortlisted artists in the year after the prize.

Artists can be nominated through the Artes Mundi website. The open call for nominations begins an international research process that enables Artes Mundi to recognise and support contemporary visual artists who:
- engage with social reality, lived experience and the human condition
- are established in their country or region and emerging internationally

Last year the Artes Mundi 4 Prize was awarded to Israeli artist Yael Bartana who will represent Poland at this year's Venice Biennale. The first Artes Mundi Prize was awarded in 2004 to Xu Bing, a Chinese born artist based in New York. In 2006, Finnish artist Eija-Liisa Ahtila received the Artes Mundi 2 Prize, and the recipient of the Artes Mundi 3 Prize in 2008 was N S Harsha from India.

Artes Mundi stimulates cultural dialogue and exchange, playing a vital role in broadening the cultural experience of audiences in Wales and beyond by building networks between the local and global, demonstrating the capacity of the visual arts to negotiate and communicate across the boundaries of language, geography and history. Through this interplay,we gain understanding of ourselves, of others, and of the relations between familiar and distant cultures.

Open Call for Art at OCCCA: Energy
•Application Deadline

26.06.2011

The Orange County Center for Contemporary Art (OCCCA) is an artist operated California non-profit corporation dedicated to the pursuit of professional excellence and freedom of expression in the arts.

Since it's inception in 1980, It provides emerging and established member and guest artists a forum to explore and develop ideas in contemporary art in an atmosphere that promotes experimentation and risk-taking, but without the specter of censorship.

Energy is all. According to the Book of Genesis, creation began in a burst of pure energy - light. According to Einstein, energy is the source of all matter, and convertible with it. According to most artists, creative energy - an inner force - is the motivation of their lives. In the studio artists transform creative energy into material expression.

Artists are encouraged to submit works that celebrate the concept or force of energy in its broadest connotations or in its most focused denotations.

The resulting juried exhibition will be a reection of the range and depth of the submitted works.

Emeritus curator of contemporary art,

TOUCH ME Exhibition: Call for Entries
•Application Deadline

29.06.2011

Go Ahead... Touch Me!
An International Exhibit Exploring Works that Invite Physical Interaction

A full-color catalog will be produced. Each exhibitor will receive one free copy.

Thanks to museology and the inevitable fragility of things conserved, preserved, and stored for posterity, we are conditioned to revere the sanctity of artwork. We take for granted that we must not touch, respect the bullet proof glass, don't step over the line, and no flash photography please. This despite our instinctual nature to use all (or at least many) of our senses to experience new things.

Manifest ends its seventh season with a project intended to contradict this conditioning. By offering "Go Ahead... Touch Me" the gallery invites artists to share work that is deliberately touchable. We are curious just what this will bring to our gallery, and how our viewing public will react...

Eligibility: TOUCH ME is open to everyone. Professionals as well as students are encouraged to enter. The only limiting factor is that works must in some way address physical interaction by the public with the actual artwork.

Media: Open to any and all traditional and non-traditional genre and media.

Deadline for Entry: June 29, 2011

3rd Annual NUDE: Exhibition Opportunity
•Application Deadline

29.06.2011

Manifest exhibits many kinds of works, from more conceptual and experimental art to the traditional. In fact we think it's important to have such a range in our repertoire. It is something that Manifest is known for. Our annual projects allow us to track how artists around the world address a consistent theme, subject, or media over time, or allow us to document the state of art in a particular strata of professional activity, and to study and preserve our findings in a meaningful way.

NUDE is one such project. Throughout history the representation of the human form has been charged with tremendous energy, both positive and negative. Whether it be a religious edict that one 'shalt not' depict the human form – a taboo, or the glorious opposite, a revelation of mastery over form in the crafting of sensuous and nearly life-like physical human beauty, the art of the body has nevertheless moved us through time.

And through all the permutations art has experienced across history, work of the body persists. We use the human nude to master skill, understand ourselves, and push social and psychological buttons for the sake of expression (sensual, delicate, aggressive, etc.). We intend for Manifest's annual NUDE project to explore how our collective body is used today in art to achieve these goals and more.

This year we are excited to renew our invitation to artists to submit works in any media, of any style or genre (abstract, conceptual, highly realistic, etc.), and of any size, for consideration in Manifest's third annual NUDE, an international competitive exhibit exploring the uncovered human form in current art.

Deadline for Entry: June 29, 2011

Economies of Resistance - call for works
•Application Deadline

29.06.2011

Free Space Projects working with Wolstenolme Creative Space are seeking expressions of interest for the Economies of Resistance project taking place this July in Liverpool.

Imagine a society in which financial institutions gamble away our money and blame us when it's gone; where profits are privatised but risk and real cost is socialised. A society in which the arts sector bears the brunt of public-spending cuts because the public are to be anaesthetised and atomised, facilitating complacency with authority and the standardization of labour. Imagine a place where inequality thwarts social mobility and where privilege creates lasting class divisions. Imagine an age of austerity...

How could the independence of creative expression be asserted in such a dystopia? Interested artists from across disciplines may respond by submitting works and ideas.

Between July 1st and July 8th, artists wishing to collaborate will have the opportunity to use the 2 floors of exhibition space; sharing knowledge and working together to imagine and realise alternatives. Works and ideas will be compiled in an attempt to issue a manifesto that broadcasts the multitude of your visions. On the evening of Friday July 8th and through that weekend these works and ideas will be made public alongside a series of related events and screenings as Economies of Resistance doubles as both exhibition and celebration of Liverpool City of Radicals 2011.
