Voies Off Prize 2011 Call for applications :: Extension
•Application Deadline

15.02.2011

2011 Voies Off Prize > The Photographic Alternative

For the past 16 years, Voies Off has offered an alternative approach to emerging contemporary photography, its particularities, its evolutions, and its areas of resistance.

Voies Off night projections during the opening week of the Rencontres d’Arles festival (first full week in July) have become an international reference for the discovery of emerging authors and the alternative venue that it creates for inter- national photographic creation.

Year after year, the selected themes have met the evolutions of our contemporary world with a critical eye. Over twenty different nationalities are represented at each festival. Every year over sixty candidates are selected for the programme of the night-projections.

Every July, the Voies Off prize is awarded by a jury of renowned professionals to an artist for the clarity of his/her vision and the high quality of his/her work.

The current amount of the prize is 2,500 euros.

Be part of the photographic alternative and participate in the 2011 Voies Off prize.

Sustainable progress, one art piece at a time: Call for Submissions
•Application Deadline

18.02.2011

We seek submissions that address sustainability issues and also function as a call to action, meshing artistry with advocacy. Potential pieces could feature novel technology, innovative re-use, or solutions for specific human/environmental interactions. We embrace work that employs a multi-faceted approach, especially that which makes use of emerging media (though traditional media is also welcomed). This includes (but is not limited to) creative and innovative design, conceptual cartography, and statistical art.

For our upcoming issue, we are particularly interested in pieces on resource scarcity. Some possible topics include increasing scarcity of resources such as rare earth metals, fossil fuels, nutrients like phosphorus, and land. Submissions dealing with resource scarcity will receive higher priority, but we will consider all submissions.

Please include with your submission a 300 to 450 word statement describing your work. This should address the guidelines set above, introducing your work to TSR readers in a way that compliments the mission of the publication. For established works, the statement should portray the submitted piece in a manner that is unique to TSR. Additionally, please provide a concise artist statement to accompany your submission.

Submissions for this issue will be accepted until February 18, 2011 and will be published starting March 11, 2010.

Send submissions to Arts Editors, Blake McConnell and Tamara Lawless at (arts@thesustainabilityreview.org)

Art Workshop 2011: Call for applications Proposals on this Side of Utopia
•Application Deadline

23.02.2011

Casino Luxembourg - Forum d'art contemporain

From 17 to 31 July 2011, Casino Luxembourg – Forum d'art contemporain and the University of Luxembourg will organise this year's edition of the Art Workshop, an international post-master residency programme based on the theme Other Possible Worlds – Proposals on this Side of Utopia, addressing twelve young international artists.
http://www.artworkshop.lu/

The Art Workshop 2011 represents a continuation of the curatorial project Other Possible Worlds – Proposals on this Side of Utopia organised by the New Society for Visual Arts (NGBK, www.ngbk.de) in Berlin from 30 April – 13 June 2011.

Workshop leaders:
Dorothee Albrecht (artist, freelance curator, lives and works in Berlin, Germany)
Paul di Felice (curator, editor/publisher, teacher at the University of Luxembourg, Luxembourg)
Berit Fischer (freelance curator, lives and works in Berlin, Germany)

Other Possible Worlds aims at opening a space for multiple projects suggesting and testing other realities of life and other 'Weltvorstellungen' (world visions) from small-scale artistic tryouts to larger social experiments.
It questions the role of art projects, art spaces and self-organised academies and labs in imagining a world beyond a purely economic globalisation. The globe is the common denominator, an international shared communal space of reference. Cultural differences, economic and ecological changes and processes of levelling are urgent global issues the workshop will deal with.

The subject of the Art Workshop 2011 refers to the potentialities of art as described by Sarat Maharaj. He points out that art does not only mean transmitting knowledge pre-established by the institutional discourse of systematic disciplines, but that art produces knowledge normal reasoning has difficulties to deal with.

Call for entries! Have you got a Smartphone?
•Application Deadline

26.02.2011

• Concept of the Exhibition
A memory is a faded moment, a blurred silhouette.

The smartphone, instead, objectifies it with maniacal precision, catching every detail that eludes the glance, combining space, time and sound as only a machine could do.
Still, paradoxically, the accuracy of data and images does not bring a cold and detached vision, but opens to the stranger the doors of a new impression, of a new, faded, memory.
• Media Necessary: having a Smartphone with integrated camera and audio recorder, plus possibility to geotag the pictures. The modalities of the photos, including filters and softwares are completely free, but the geotag must be active; the recording of the place should be a minute long.

Standard Printing Formats: square (15X15cm), 13X18cm, 10x16cm.
Send us the picture, the recording and the geotag coordinates (date, address, latitude
and longitude).

Love video - Call for submission, short films
•Application Deadline

28.02.2011

Love Video 2011

About 12 years ago we made our first call for entries in search for artists' videos and short films. It was the beginning of home videos and affordable video cameras. During exhibitions, these films were shown on a TV screen or in a screening. They were simple stories, filmed performances, still shots.
Now these films represent a body of 12 thematic programs and include about 100 films screened by the Brigade des Images in France and abroad.
To celebrate these several years of moving images, we are taking up once again our original theme: love video.

In the context of an uneasy political situation, love and cinema are becoming essential and, in spite of the proliferation of mass media and TV channels, last year in France witnessed the highest numbers of movie theatres attendance ever since the 1960s.

The films we are looking for in this new edition will treat the subjects of love and/or cinema, will feature intimate forms of narratives probably reminding us of home videos, will speak of love or its disappearance, and, why not, of politics...
Intimate is quite often political.

This program will be shown in France and abroad starting April 2011, you can visit the following site to find out about screening places:
http://www.brigadedesimages.com

Please send your films before the 28th of February 2011 to:
Brigade des Images
4, avenue Boutroux, 75013 Paris, France
Technical requirements: DVD-R or Quicktime, 10 minutes maximum length, with a self-addressed and prepaid envelope.

Artists' Books on Tour: Artist Competition and Mobile Museum
•Application Deadline

28.02.2011

An EU-funded project and collaboration of the MAK VIENNA (Austrian Museum of Applied Arts / Contemporary Art), the UPM PRAGUE (Museum of Decorative Arts) and the MGLC LJUBLJANA (International Centre of Graphic Arts)

For centuries, artists have expressed themselves in the field of books and printing, but adequate recognition and critical acceptance of "Artists' Books" as a distinct genre only came in the 20th century. The ABoT project promotes contemporary art and artists working in the field with the ambition to raise more public awareness for this genre of art which is, for many artists, a central and important form of practice. We therefore offer artists a platform to share their artists' books within a unique all-European competition for the first time.

Submissions are accepted as completed physical or digital objects as well as in the form of conceptual designs for projected works.

TIMELINE

Registration: December 1st, 2010 - February 28th, 2011
Submission: December 1st, 2010 - May 2nd, 2011 (postmark)

(Lithuania), is opening in March 2011. The principal objective of the

Symposium

CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS TO INTER-FORMAT SYMPOSIUM
•Application Deadline

28.02.2011

*CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS TO INTER-FORMAT SYMPOSIUM
<http://nidacolony.lt/en/t-r-a-c-e-s-air-and-symposium-interformat/symposium-interformat>*

*INTER-FORMAT Symposium: Reinventing Interdisciplinarity (part of the
T-R-A-C-E-S.net <http://www.t-r-a-c-e-s.net/> project):
*May 3-6, 2011, Nida/Vilnius.

*Deadline: February 28, 2011; please send your proposals for
contributions to vytautas@nidacolony.lt *

The symposium’s goal is to gather artists, curators, researchers and
practitioners and reinvent the format of presenting and sharing art,
knowledge and experience. One of the key features of contemporary
culture is the changing role of the artist, who sometimes assumes the
role of a researcher and curator, and vice versa. Where are the borders
of these roles? How could a serious researcher and theorist do a
performance, and how could a playful artist do serious research and
theorize?

The symposium in Nida is going to be an ongoing performance with
lectures, discussions, presentations, coffee/wild herbal tea drinking
circles, dinner with conceptual sentiments (to everybody’s health),
eco-minimal-media events, audio-lobby, imaginary mapping, smell
sightseeing, etc. We are looking forward to contributions that offer an
engaging format of participation and rethink interdisciplinary practices
between art, research, theory & curatorship, as well as inter-roles in
contemporary culture. Some grants for travel expenses available.

*CALL FOR EVENT PROPOSALS*

Nida Art Colony welcomes proposals from curators/institutions to do
events at the Colony.

*Deadline: February 28, 2011; fill in application form

send proposals to vytautas@nidacolony.lt

Satellietgroep has an embedded art and culture approach to researching the way the sea and waterways influences cities and people. We aim to research the pressure on public, social and cultural use on the waterfronts and develop new concepts and strategies focused on a new approach of future sea and coastal urban areas.

Arts and science can express the spatial and social qualities - as well as the problems - of our coastal areas, and make them engagingly accessible to the public. International Call for Art Show Juried by Gary Hill, Center on Contemporary Art, Seattle
•Application Deadline

04.12.2011

From December 29, 2011 – March 18, 2012, CoCA will present its 22nd annual juried exhibition seeking work from emerging as well as established artists in a wide variety of visual media. While there is no theme this year as such, we’re hunting for work that experiments and explores in general, crossing disciplinary boundaries, challenging established notions of time and space, cultural production, and the objet d’art itself.

CoCA has presented the Annual since 1989, each time inviting an independent juror to select the work from among the entries received. For this year’s 22nd anniversary of the show, CoCA is proud to have Gary Hill as juror.

Please note that selected work must be shipped to the gallery by December 23. CoCA insures work during exhibition, but shipping to/from, as well as shipping insurance remain the responsibility of the artist. Call (001) (206) 851-9641 or email david@cocaseattle.org for more information.

There will be an opening reception on Thursday, December 29, at CoCA’s Georgetown gallery located inside the Seattle Design Center at 5701 6th Avenue South, Seattle WA 98108. http://www.seattledesigncenter.com/

Artists in any region and any country are welcome to submit.

Two-dimensional, three-dimensional and multi-media work will be considered. A $500 first prize and a $250 second prize will be awarded by the juror, as well as up to two “honorable mentions” featured on CoCA’s website. A catalog of the show will feature artists’ statements, biographies, and images, as well as an introductory essay by Gary Hill. In addition to having all participating artists archived on CoCA’s website, there will also be an opportunity to place work in CoCA’s new online store.

Open call: culturia aritst in residence program based in Berlin
•Application Deadline

05.12.2011

idea and program
culturia is a twofold: an art residency and a non-material collection. Strategically declining in its approach to pure studio practice, culturia invites artists to present projects in close relation between process and presentation.

The main point of the program is to enhance the internal development of the artist during the short-term residency, which can be more valuable than a production of new objects. Following this vision culturia has opened, parallel to the realization of the artist’s proposal, a construction of a document that seeks for the understanding of an ideal point of view on art. Here, the approach and medium are chosen by the artist as long as the statement remains “visible” to others.

open call for artists and researchers
deadline: 5th December 2011
residency period: 1st February– 31st April 2012

culturia has been building its networks since 2005 and has progressively changed from a residency using temporary spaces in Berlin to develop into an experimental place where the practice of exploring artistic process became the concept.

Theme
From the magic mushroom to parsley

Workshop by
ATHINA ANTONIADO

Within the last few years living in Berlin, the capital of the Arts as many people will call it, I watched art adopt a role as a desirable lifestyle and ignoring the fundamental responsibility we have as artists, to counteract the negative energies of our time. War, the destruction of the earth, competition and lies are forcing us to become more selfish, more materialistic and more closed to our little enjoyable lives.

My interest with this talk is to plant a seed for the construction or even the dis-construction of 'reality' into a better, more functional world. We will start from the time...before history and move through it till today...hopefully I will be able to inspire a change in how we see ourselves and each other...and ultimately, together, we could turn the world into imagination.

Open Call for Submissions: The Chicago Torture Justice Memorials
•Application Deadline

10.12.2011

Attention Artists, Architects, Photographers, Writers, Poets, Musicians, Performers and everyone concerned with justice. We invite artists and those who seek justice of all kinds to submit proposals for a speculative monument to memorialize the Chicago Police torture cases. Our goal is to honor the survivors of torture, their family members and the African American communities affected by the torture. The monument will also recall and honor the nearly two-decades long struggle for justice waged by torture survivors and their families, attorneys, community organizers, and people from every neighborhood and walk of life in Chicago. These memorial projects will serve as a public reckoning with police torture in Chicago and honor those who fought to stop it. We welcome proposals that exhibit radical imagination – they may critically examine the usefulness and limitations of monuments themselves while exploring the issues of reparations, truth and reconciliation, and justice.

Criteria for proposals:
A proposed monument may take any form – from architecture to haiku, from website to mural, from community organization to performance, from bronze plaque to large-scale memorial.

Submission process: the submission can be in the form of a PDF, PPT, webpage, or other accessible electronic format. Non-electronic submissions will also be accepted; please contact justicememorials@gmail.com to arrange delivery or mail to:

Animating an abandoned amusement park in East Berlin.
http://kulturbahn.org/

The Location
In the forested Treptower Park along the Spreeriver in East Berlin, find an abandoned amusement park. Built by the GDR in 1969, Kulturpark Planterwald was a site for Eastern Bloc amusement and exchange. Aer the fall of the Wall, the park became the family owned Spreepark, and suffered challenges of attendance and economy, and the bankrupt park closed its gates in 2001. Perhaps you have been there since, and have already hopped the fence and explored this jungle of collapsed thrill machines.

C/O BERLIN - Talents
•Application Deadline

16.12.2011

Talents is an international competition held annually. The jury of professional judges selects four photographers and four art critics each year from the submitted entries. Their work is presented in four solo exhibitions at C/O Berlin over the course of the year and at the Goethe Institute in New York City. Each solo exhibition is accompanied by a publication in which images and text enter into dialogue: talented young artists present themselves and their projects to a broad public, open up their work for discussion, and thus create a public forum.

In 2012 too, the Talents series will focus on the theme of Cinematic Thinking. Engagement with the medium of film has become ever more central to photography in recent years. This can be seen in the increasing exploration of film production processes, experimentation with narrative structures, and references to film aesthetics and film myths.

More info: http://www.co-berlin.info/program/talents/application.html
info@co-berlin.com

Who can apply?
Photographers and art critics up to the age of 35.
Photographers can submit up to 15 samples of their work in print form – maximal size DIN A4, no originals. A short project description should accompany the photographs, as well as the online application form:

Urban Research: Open call for film and video works!
•Application Deadline

20.12.2011

The program Urban Research, curated by Klaus W. Eisenlohr for Directors Lounge 2012, reaches beyond the genre "city films". Contemporary artists are engaged in local politics, they are concerned with specific urban problems and developments, and they are directly interacting with the public with performances and public interventions. Due to rapid changes of urban environment, place is no more a reliable urban structure connected with consistency and collective memory. Place must be reinvented and newly defined over and over, and this does not only apply for spaces of temporary use. Public space in the sense of social interchange and interaction — as well as just a space free to use — is not a given opportunity any more, which can be taken for granted. International artists address these themes and issues with a variety of forms, experimental, documentary, abstract, and narrative; they intervene directly or they show there visions of public space, and a new urban landscape.
