Curating in the expanded field
•Application Deadline

30.01.2009

Initiated in 1994, the Curatorial Programme of de Appel arts centre wishes to offer young curators a condensed package of experiences and skills that can be used as tools and instruments during the development of their professional career. De Appel is an internationally oriented arts centre that functions as a site for the production of performances, research and presentation of contemporary visual arts through a series of exhibitions, publications and discursive events.
The unique and special thematic focus is on the polarity between 'free-lance' and 'institutional' curating and on the examination of 'context-responsive' curating. The formats and methodologies that curators deal with in the presentation of art in the 'expanded field', outside of the white cube, are explored in the programme.

Dorothea Lange–Paul Taylor documentary prize
•Application Deadline

31.01.2009

The year 2009 marks the nineteenth anniversary of the Dorothea
Lange–Paul Taylor documentary prize, a $20,000 award given annually by
the Center for Documentary Studies. First announced a year after the
Center's founding at Duke University, the prize was created to
encourage collaboration between documentary writers and photographers
in the tradition of the acclaimed photographer Dorothea Lange and
writer and social scientist Paul Taylor. In 1941 Lange and Taylor
published An American Exodus, a book that renders human experience
eloquently in text and images and remains a seminal work in
documentary studies. The Lange-Taylor Prize honors their important
collaborative work.
The Lange-Taylor Prize is offered to a writer and a photographer in
the early stages of a documentary project. By encouraging such
collaborative efforts, the Center for Documentary Studies supports the
documentary process in which writers and photographers work together
to record the human story.

INFECTED: VIRAL CALL for VIRAL WORK
Artist commissions for 'Anti-Bodies: Beyond The Body-Ideal', the South West
Cultural Olympiad, UK in conjunction with the launch of 'Anti-Bodies: Beyond The Body-Ideal'
...
We will commission two online projects that respond to the idea of the 'virus' for 'Anti-Bodies: Beyond The Body-Ideal', a series of projects that reflect on the ideal 'body-machine' of the Olympic athlete. By virus we mean to draw attention to any agent that is able to reproduce itself and spread over communications networks and infect the host body. For instance, a computer virus describes the self-reproducing activities of a program that can simply spread and affect other programs, and thereby reflects the structural properties of the computer and the network it operates through. Moreover, the cultural form of a virus embodies the principles of negation in keeping with the anti-bodies theme.

The Dream Machine, Useless Beauty and Fuzzy Logic: correlations of violence
•Application Deadline

31.01.2009

We invite contributions of visual, aural and written material in open responses: on the abandonment of correlation as a necessity of art’s contingency. Thought and action are together ‘useless’ if incapable of escaping the invisible and severe circle of ‘correlationism’ in which they inevitably conform to another use. Terms ‘use’ and ‘useless’ are in a relational pact. Paired in contradiction, not opposed in meaning, from want of a practical consistency to and from authenticity, something like the ‘for-me’ and the ‘in-itself’ appears ‘cold’, fatal. The co-relation applies itself like glue to a paradox of inauthenticity. The beauty of the unthinkable is violent revolution, but revolution is itself unthinkable. Both statements are helpless, contingent of fuzzy logic and the inverse necessity of beauty.

9–13 June 2010, Toronto, Canada

PSi 16, Performing Publics, will take place in Toronto as part of a collaboration between York University’s Faculty of Fine Arts and the Ontario College of Art & Design. The conference will investigate the power of performance to intervene in, reshape, and reinvigorate the public sphere at the beginning of the twenty-first century. We invite proposals that take up notions of “public” in a variety of ways, pointing to the critically generative and fraught aspects of the term as it has been adopted within performance studies. The conference will be staged during Toronto’s annual Luminato Festival, and will provide several opportunities for participants to experience and reflect on its dynamic arts programming.

Shift proposals:
Continuing the explorations of PSi 15, we invite proposals for “shifts”: innovative session formats that push the boundaries of the well-constructed panel. These may include workshops, performances, and interactive events.

In this presentation and workshop, Keith Kahn-Harris, author of ‘Extreme
Metal: Music and Culture on the Edge’ asks: ‘How do we mourn the death
of the unknown?’

In the first half Dr Kahn-Harris will put on a multimedia presentation
arguing that the history of metal scenes since 1989 are a symptom of a
wider process of the ‘unknown becoming known’ whose apotheosis was the
revolutions in Eastern Europe in 1989.

In the second half of the workshop, participants will be asked to try
and capture and mourn their first exposure to a subculture, scene or
previously secret world. Using art, writing or other creative mediums
participants will produce a collective ‘scrapbook’ of poignant and
nostalgic moments in the death of the unknown.

The event will take place in English. There is a limited number of
places available for this event, so please register at

Found Footage!
•Application Deadline

15.11.2009

Found Footage!
Christmas 2009 feature on VideoChannel

According to [Wikipedia] -->
"Found footage is a filmmaking term which describes a method of compiling films partly or entirely of footage which has not been created by the filmmaker, and changing its meaning by placing it in a new context. The term refers to the "found object" (objet trouvé) of art history."

VideoChannel is looking for some excellent films and videos using "found footage" as a relevant component of the film/video making which are planned to form also the basis for FFF (Found Footage Film) collection. For the online feature in December and later physical screenings, however, is most relevant, that no authors rights are violated by the creator using "found footage".
